Amidst the mist-laden hills of Wayanad, where the echoes of nature once defined serenity, the landscape of Chooralmala and Mundakkai was violently reshaped by the unforgiving landslides of July 2024. Over 400 lives were lost, entire settlements buried, and the survivors left grappling with a reality where home was now just a memory.
Yet, from the rubble of despair, a group of courageous women emerged—not just to rebuild their lives, but to create something meaningful. Their journey of survival and self-reliance took the form of Bailey, a social enterprise that stands as a testament to human endurance, much like the Bailey bridge constructed by the Indian Army in Mundakkai to restore connectivity after the disaster.

Bailey: A Symbol of Strength and Sustainability
These women, many of whom lost their families, homes, and livelihoods, found solace in collective action. With the support of the district administration, the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF CAbC), and various organizations, they started crafting Bailey Bags—handmade, eco-friendly cloth bags that blend modern design with traditional craftsmanship. Each bag is more than just a product; it is a piece of resilience, a mark of survival, and a promise for a sustainable future.
Their efforts have been recognized and celebrated, culminating in the grand inauguration of Bailey Bags by Sri. Meghashree DR IAS, District Collector of Wayanad, on March 8, 2025, at Rippon, Meppadi.

The green hue pays homage to Wayanad’s lush forests and the eco-friendly nature of their products.
